EVEN the most passionate among those who wanted Raymond Davis’s head knew in their heart of hearts that the CIA contractor would eventually be set free.

While speculation abounds about the way in which he walked out of his prison cell, the general opinion seems to be focused on the possibility of a deal with the families of the victims.

So the March 16 climax, after many weeks of a tension-filled drama, unfolded predictably: the families got the money, the court dropped the murder charges, and, for the sake of appearances, gave Davis an already-served prison sentence plus a marginal fine for the possession of illegal weapons.

Raymond Davis, the man who almost single handedly sent Pakistan into a new free-fall of conspiracy theories has made his getaway in true spy movie form. He sneaked out of jail and was flown out to London the very day he was indicted for double murder by Pakistan’s courts — a decision that was turned around in the blink of an eye following pardons by the families of his victims.

Personally, I am glad to see this diplomatic quagmire come to a close.

The Obama administration’s oft-repeated claim that US-Pakistan understanding and cooperation had graduated to a level where it could be described as a ‘strategic relationship’, never carried much conviction in either capital. The Raymond Davis case has confirmed the limitations of our ties to Washington.

While some in Pakistan are distressed at the way this ‘cause célèbre’ has impacted on our relations, it holds important lessons for both countries which are equally guilty of missteps, arising out of misperceptions that do no credit to either.

US Embassy Protects Dutch Diplomats Carrying Grenades In Pakistan

This happened seventeen months ago, but it is important to recall it now after the arrest of CIA agent Raymond Davis. This story establishes a pattern.

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan—On Tuesday, 6 October 2009, new evidence emerged on how the US Embassy in Islamabad is involved in providing diplomatic cover to illegal CIA operations in Pakistan.

Dutch diplomats were intercepted carrying explosives near the residence of Pakistani president. The weapons were not licensed and the car number plate were fake. The real surprise came when the US Embassy in Islamabad dispatched a US embassy employee to save the Dutch diplomats.

The weapons found by Pakistani policemen were no exactly the kind one would carry for self-protection. The police recovered two 9-millimeter pistols, four magazines, two smoke grenades, two stun grenades and six bulletproof jackets. The two Dutch diplomats, identified as Tomas Smith and William Van, failed to produce any permits for the weapons.

When asked why they were carrying grenades, the Dutch diplomats claimed the grenades were for testing purposes. In a few minutes, an employee of the US embassy, Sunny Christopher, arrived in another vehicle to back up the Dutch diplomats, giving rise to the speculations that the latter might have been transporting weapons for the Americans.

The story of Raymond Allen Davis is one familiar to me and I wish our government would quit doing these things – they cost us credibility.

Davis is the American being held as a spy working under diplomatic cover out of our embassy in Islamabad, Pakistan. You can understand why foreign countries no longer trust us and people are rising up across the Middle East against the Great Satan.In the Vietnam War the country of Laos held a geo-strategic position, as does Pakistan does to Afghanistan today. As in Pakistan, in Laos our country conducted covert military operations against a sovereign people, using the CIA.

Pakistan Court Rejects CIA Agent Davis’ Claim for Diplomatic Immunity

LAHORE: In a setback to US efforts to seek early release of its national Raymond Davis arrested for a double murder, a Pakistani court today rejected his claim that he has diplomatic immunity and said it would go ahead with his trial.

During the last hearing of the case, 37-year-old Davis, a suspected CIA contractor, had filed an application in which he insisted that he had immunity.

Tit for tat: Frustrated CIA mulls targeting Pakistani Counterparts Abroad

Washington—Suffering irreparable loss after blowing up of Raymond Davis’ cover in Lahore, the American premier intelligence apparatus is contemplating on a tit-for-tat trapping or targeting Pakistani counterparts serving as diplomats abroad.

Well-placed diplomatic sources told Online on condition of anonymity here on Thursday that they had noticed vibes clearly indicating level of frustration and annoyance especially at the Central Investigation Agency (CIA) upon Islamabad’s constant denial to release Davis on blanket immunity. 

According to the sources, the situation so far putting Davis on trial in Pakistan on charges of double murder in Lahore is proving to be the loss of not just the cover of an agent but also that of a “key asset” in the intelligence jargon for CIA. “Therefore it is unlikely that they (American intelligence apparatus) would let it go without returning it to the Pakistani counterparts one way or the other,” the sources added.

“Easy prey of this revenge design of the Americans could be Pakistani intelligence staff serving abroad chiefly in US, Europe, and Afghanistan,” the sources observed. This is already clear for sure that the so-called intelligence sharing in war on terror has hit a moratorium due to Raymond Davis case.

Data Retrieved From Davis’ Phones, GPS Device

LAHORE: The Counter Terrorism Wing (CTW) of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has submitted a report to the Punjab police on the data recovered from Raymond Davis’ cell phones and other devices seized from his possession, The Express Tribune has learnt.

Davis’ belongings, that included two cell phones, sim cards, a wireless set and a GPS device, were sent by the Punjab police to the interior ministry for detailed forensic analysis.
