People’s Aman Committee Arrested in the act OF ‘Militant’

The Crime Investigation Department claimed to havearrested an alleged militant while he was planting explosives at the Garden Police Headquarters. The police said the suspect, Abdul Qadir Kalmati, also known as Raketi, son of Abdul Rehman, was working under the umbrella of Lashkar-e-Balochistan IS BELIEVED TO BE SISTER GROUP OF People’s Aman Committee (PAC).

The gang Kalmati is allegedly associated with is involved in over half a dozen terrorism case s and target killing in Karachi.

CID officials said he was planning to blow up the headquarters when they intercepted him. His accomplices, however, managed to run away in the chaos that ensued as both sides opened fire at one another.

They also seized four bombs with detonators, each containing a kilogramme of highly explosive material, and a TT pistol from the spot.

Later, Kalmati told the police where the gang was storing other ammunition. A raid at a place near the Kathore Mor led the police to the goldmine of weapons, where they found 107 dynamite sticks, four electronic detonators, an anti-tank mine, a BM rocket and 10 remote-control switches.

KARACHI families fraught by firing

“For the last two days, my family and I have become prisoners in our own home,” said Liaquatabad resident Fareed Hussain. Firing could be heard as he spoke.

As the death toll in target killings rises every day, residents of Baloch Para, near Teen Hatti, find themselves in a war-like situation.

The trigger was a raid on Tuesday by the Rangers in which one alleged drug peddler was killed. The gambling and drug-peddling gangs have been firing in retaliation since then.

The Rangers began the raid after receiving a tip-off and were looking for a drug peddler named Majeed alias Chota Baloch. However, Amjad alias Bara Baloch was killed.

KARACHI, : The People`s Amn Committee, whose open support by Sindh Home Minister Dr Zulfikar Mirza on Sunday triggered a fresh spell of wrangling between the two main coalition partners in the Sindh government, was formed to sustain a ceasefire between the warring gangs of Lyari in early 2008. While it seems to have achieved that goal to a certain extent, it has increasingly been associated with an extortion racket in the city.

Lyari had been engulfed in the gang warfare since 2001 till recently, during which period perhaps hundreds of people were killed.

Lord save us from our ‘protectors’!

Lord save us! This was the prayer that sprang to my lips as I heard Home Minister Zulfiqar Mirza unabashedly declare at a public gathering in Malir on Sunday: “If all members of the People’s Aman Committee are criminals, the home minister is a criminal too.” He wasn’t done shocking us as he went on to admit a direct link between the ruling Pakistan People’s Party and the People’s Aman Committee (PAC). “In view of the sacrifices rendered by its members, I today announce that the People’s Aman Committee is an affiliate of the PPP.” 

What the PAC is all about is general knowledge. It is certainly not about the people. Nor does it have anything to do with Aman. At best, it’s a group comprising Lyari’s criminal elements — and now PPP activists by Mirza’s own admission — whose name has frequently been mentioned by people who have suffered at the hands of extortionists and kidnappers. Of late, a number of shopkeepers and traders have complained of gangsters belonging to the PAC visiting them regularly to extort money. Mirza’s admission must also have come as a shock to those who lost their near and dear ones to a carnage in the Shershah scrap market in October last year when gunmen went on a shooting rampage killing 13 innocent people, all belonging to an ethnic group, in a bid to terrorise the shopkeepers into giving them extortion money. That bloodbath left imprints pointing the accusing finger at the People’s Aman Committee. That was partly why the PPP had been dissociating itself from the PAC before its home minister finally admitted on Sunday that the committee was in fact an affiliate of the party.
