TURKEY A ROLE MODEL!

Within less than a decade Turkey has really turned around in almost all strategic aspects. In 2002, it suffered from almost all the ills that Pakistan is facing today. A sinking economy, political instability, ‘junta’ dominated civil-military equation and polarized society were the hall-marks of Turkey. It prided itself with secular ideals and shunned its Muslim identity. Getting the membership of European Union was a matter of life and death. 

Nevertheless, this was the profile of the state only. Public sentiment was quite the opposite. Shrine going jeans wearing youngsters, privately praying elderly and masses flocking to see the Islamic relics in the specially arranged centers represented the simmering attachment of the public with Islam.  Undercurrents were visible indicating that people were looking for an outlet, an opportunity and a genuine political leadership.

RAF Eurofighter Typhoons 'Beaten By Pakistani F-16s'

Pakistani pilots flying modernised versions of the 1970s-vintage F-16 Falcon fighter have beaten the RAF's brand-new Eurofighter Typhoon superfighters during air combat exercises in Turkey, according to a Pakistani officer.

This interview with an unnamed but evidently experienced Pakistani Air Force (PAF) F-16 pilot on exchange with the Turkish air force, posted on the official site of the PAF display team, includes the following intriguing passage.

Q: Any memorable experiences that you would like to share?

A: On one occasion – in one of the international Anatolian Eagles - PAF pilots were pitted against RAF Typhoons, a formidable aircraft. There were three set-ups and in all three, we shot down the Typhoons. The RAF pilots were shocked.

JF-17 Thunder along F-16 to participate in Izmir Air Show in Turkey

It is confirmed that Pakistan Air Force JF-17 Thunder will be participating in the Izmir air show in Turkey along with F-16 fighter jests.

Three JF-17 Thunders from the Pakistan Air Force participated in Farnborough Air Show and Zhuhai Air Show last year in order to attract customers. Chinese company CATIC has said that are in talks with about eight countries for sale of the JF-17 Thunder.

Pakistan air force has already announced its plans to purchase around 250 JF-17 Thunder fighter jets to replace its old inventory. Pakistan has signed an agreement with the China for the second batch of 50 JF-17 Thunders this month.

Pakistan would back Taliban office in Turkey, official says

ANKARA (Reuters) - Pakistan would back a plan to allow the Taliban to open a political office in Turkey to help with talks to end the war in Afghanistan, a Pakistani official said on Thursday during a visit by Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari to Ankara.

Muslim Turkey, which has hosted talks aimed at building trust between Pakistan and Afghanistan, has said it is open to allowing the establishment of a diplomatic presence for the Taliban on its soil, but that there is no formal request yet.

Analysts say that any solution to the Afghan conflict would likely require the support of Pakistan.

PAKISTAN PEACEKEEPERS RESCUED TURKISH AMBASSADOR AT IVORY COAST

Pakistan Army troops rescued Turkish Ambassador at Ivory Coast Mr Yekcin Kaga Erensoi alongwith three other staff members, Mr Golant, Mr Mahmut (third Secretary) and Mr Ali Ahisk at Ivory Coast (Abijan) on 11 April 2011. Turkish Ambassador was trapped in a Hotel in a volatile situation where gun battle was going on in rival factions when he asked Pakistani troops for help Pakistani troops immediately rushed and rescued the Turkish Embassy staff.  Nine Nigerian citizens who were trapped in troubled area were also rescued by Pakistani troops. It is pertinent to mention that Pakistan Army troops as part of UN Contingent are playing an active role in saving here the lives of the innocent people of Côte d'Ivoire. Pakistani troops have performed extremely well by protecting foreign embassies and effectively controlling the situation in their area of responsibility. United Nations have greatly appreciated Pakistani Peacekeeper’s contributions in restoring peace in the country.

ISI chief reaches Turkey, made covert visit to France‎

Turkish FM meets Hamas chief over Palestinian rift

Turkey's foreign minister met late Wednesday with the leader of the Hamas movement in Syria to press for reconciliation between feuding Palestinian factions, Anatolia news agency reported. 

Ahmet Davutoglu said he held talks with Hamas supremo Khaled Meshaal at the Turkish embassy in Damascus, where he was on a visit to discuss unrest shaking Syria, following a telephone call with Palestinian leader Mahmud Abbas last week. Abbas is leader of the rival Fatah faction.

"It is positive that both sides want that national reconciliation is secured as soon as possible," Davutoglu said in the Syrian capital, according to Anatolia.

Turkey Warns Against Coalition 'Hidden Agenda' On Libya

Without naming any states, he said it was "obvious" that some coalition members perceived the conflict as an opportunity for themselves.

He also urged Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi to resign.

Scepticism about the coalition's aims has also been voiced at a session of the Russian parliament.

Turkey, Nato's only predominantly Muslim member and a key player in the Middle East, offered on Wednesday to send five ships and a submarine to join a naval operation to enforce an arms embargo off Libya.

However, the country has publicly questioned the wisdom of coalition air strikes.

"We saw in the past such [military] operations increasing the loss of lives," Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Tuesday, pledging that his country would "never point guns at the Libyan people".

Exercise on Urban Warfare to begin between Turkey, Afghanistan and Pakistan

A Turkey-Afghanistan-Pakistan military live exercise on urban warfare will be held in Istanbul on March 19-26. The three decided to hold joint exercises at the conclusion of the 5th Trilateral Summit in December 2010.

The exercise constitutes one of the tangible results of the Trilateral Summit process, which was initiated in 2007 and has become since then an increasingly important platform for dialogue and cooperation among the three countries on a wide range of issues, said a written statement released by the Foreign Ministry.

Turkey Opposes NATO Libya Intervention: PM

ISTANBUL — Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday reiterated his opposition to NATO intervention in Libya, saying it would trigger dangerous consequences.

"Military intervention by NATO in Libya or any other country would be totally counter-productive," the Anatolia news agency quoted Erdogan as saying during an address here at an international forum.

"In addition to being counter-productive, such an operation could have dangerous consequences."

Turkey, a NATO member, stressed that the 28-member military alliance could intervene only when one of its members is attacked.

During a visit to Germany late last month, Erdogan said a NATO intervention in Libya would be "unthinkable" and "absurd".

Turkey’s biggest intelligence base to be handed over to the Natl. Intel Org. (MİT)

Turkey’s highest capacity electronic military intelligence base, known as the Flag Garrison and formally as the General Staff Electronic Systems Command (GES), will be placed under civilian control, according to a report published in the Radikal daily yesterday.
 

Radikal reporter Murat Yetkin wrote that the necessary procedures to place the GES under the control of the National Intelligence Organization (MİT) were already under way. According to the report, this was recently started under orders from Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. When the process is complete, MİT’s Electronic Technical Intelligence (ETİ) unit will move to the Flag Garrison, located in the south of Ankara off the Haymana highway. Yetkin says this has been confirmed by unnamed military sources who said the project was part of larger efforts to coordinate GES and MİT’s activities more effectively and to avoid a duplication of intelligence gathering.

Turkey seals largest single defense export deal Malaysia

Turkish and Malaysian defense companies have signed a $600 million deal, making it Turkey's largest single sale in defense industry exports.

Turkish defense industry firm FNSS signed a deal in Ankara on Tuesday with Malaysia's DEFTECH to sell armored combat vehicle frames to the Malaysian armed forces. Under the deal FNSS will sell 257 armored carrier frames for the Pars 8x8 to Malaysia. The 8x8 Pars armored vehicle will be redesigned by Turkish and Malaysian engineers, and the vehicles will be produced locally in Malaysia. The deal is important for the Turkish defense industry since it is the largest single sale in defense industry exports.
