‘Stable Afghanistan not worth abandoning strategic interests’

ISLAMABAD:
Army chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani has told a visiting European delegation that “Pakistan wants a stable Afghanistan but not at the cost of Pakistan,” suggesting that Islamabad wants to remain relevant in any peace initiative and is unlikely to accept a solution that would undermine its strategic interests.
This revelation was made by German Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development Dirk Niebel, who is currently visiting Pakistan alongside his European Union counterpart.
“We have to find a solution (to this problem) and Pakistan’s cooperation with Germany and the EU can become the basis for the stability of the region,” said Niebel.

Pakistan 'blocking supplies to US base'

Pakistan is blocking food and water from reaching a remote base used by the US for its secret drones programme, severely hampering counter terrorism strategy, according to a senior American official.

Both sides are now briefing against the other as hostility between the two countries grows more intense – and more open – day by day.
A senior American official told The New York Times that supplies had been choked off to the airbase and that they were gradually "strangling the alliance" by making things difficult for the Americans in Pakistan.
The drones programme, although never publicly acknowledged by the US and repeatedly condemned by Pakistan, is credited with killing a series of high-profile targets.

Enemy out to discredit Army and ISI

The US and Western media have intensified propaganda against the Pakistan Army and its security agencies to discredit the defenders of Pakistan and create a situation like the one that had led to the disintegration of what was once the Soviet Union, according to a senior official who knows how the enemies had acted to wipe off the global map the only power that used to challenge the United States. Talking to TheNation on Wednesday, the official said the enemy wanted to demoralise Pakistan’s security forces so that they were unable to play any role in case the Islamic republic faced a situation like the one Libya, Syria and some other Arab countries have been through.

Conversations With Serving Armed Forces Personnel Provide Insights & Fourth Generation Warfare (4GW)

Demoralize the enemy from within by surprise, terror, sabotage, assassination. This is the war of the future.
Adolf Hitler

“It has to be the Indians, I tell you,” he said. “Look at the details of this attack: the target inside the base was a technology specifically designed to counter the Indian forces.”
This is the view inside most military circles — the argument I heard most often when I visited Islamabad this month, arriving on the same night as the PNS Mehran Base attack. My conversations with military officials centered around terrorism, and these discussions brought to light the concept of Fourth Generation Warfare (4GW).
A research paper at the National Defense University focusing on 4GW contends that Pakistan is facing a war on a front most of us can’t even analyse correctly. According to the paper, war theorists all over the world say that warfare has entered into a new phase where “an evolved form of insurgency uses all available networks — political, economic, social and military — to convince the enemy’s decision makers that their strategic goals are either unachievable or too costly for the perceived benefit.” It characterises 4GW as a scenario where the distinction between war and peace is blurred so that war becomes non-linear, possibly to the point of having no definable battlefields or fronts.

Pakistan tells CIA chief no U.S. boots on the ground

(Reuters) - Pakistan's army and intelligence chiefs told CIA Director Leon Panetta they were not willing to reverse a decision to cut the number of U.S. troops allowed in Pakistan, Pakistani military officials said on Saturday.
Panetta, nominated to take over as defense secretary next month, arrived in Pakistan on Friday on an unannounced visit, his first trip since a secret U.S. raid that killed Osama bin Laden and severely damaged ties between the allies.

India Frets Over Pakistan Army’s Desert Exercise

NEW DELHI – With the Indian Army perfecting a short but power-filled warfare doctrine intended against its western neighbour, Pakistan too is war-gaming a counter-strategy in an exercise on for a fortnight now, a few kilometres from its borders with India’s Rajasthan state.
The Pakistan Army’s Karachi-based V Corps launched the exercise a fortnight ago in the desert terrain of Thar, senior Indian intelligence sources told IANS news agency.

Pakistan-India fail to reach agreement on Siachen demilitarisation

NEW DEHLI: Pakistan and India failed to reach an agreement on the demilitarisation of Siachen after talks ended in New Delhi on Tuesday.
Both sides have reportedly maintained their earlier adopted stances.
India wants Pakistan to authenticate the AGPL, both on the maps and the ground, as it occupies most of the dominating posts on the Saltoro Ridge, they said. Pakistan, in turn, has been insisting on maintaining the pre-1972 troop positions as agreed in the Simla Agreement.
It was the 12th round of inconclusive talks on Siachen, considered one of the less difficult disputes to resolve between India and Pakistan.
“Both sides agreed to continue the discussions in a meaningful and result-oriented manner. They agreed to meet again on a mutually-convenient date in Islamabad,” a joint statement by India and Pakistan said.

Pak Short-range nukes raise alarm

Pakistan's recent testing of NASR or Hatf-9 short range missile, coupled with its rapidly growing stockpile of low-intensity nuclear weapons, suggests that it is actually preparing to cross the nuclear threshold in case of a conflict with India, The Times of India reported on Sunday.
One of world's most authoritative voices on Pakistan's nuclear strength and American nuclear expert Hans Kristensen told the paper that a nuclear-tipped NASR seemed more like a weapon intended for use against Indian forces advancing into Pakistani territory.

"While that wouldn't threaten Indian survival in itself, it would of course mean crossing the nuclear threshold early in a conflict, which is one of the particular concerns of a short-range nuclear weapon,'' said Kristensen, who is also Federation of American Scientists' Nuclear Information Project director.
While the 60-km short range of the nuclear capable missile doesn't threaten the security of any major Indian city, it certainly makes the Indian army and security forces vulnerable in case India does try to implement its much talked about Cold Start Doctrine

PAKISTAN: 'identified targets' in india

Islamabad: Pakistan has already rehearsed its contingency plan to attack ‘identified targets’ in archrival India in case of an Indian strike on Pakistani soil, ISI chief Lieutenant General Ahmad Shuja Pasha has said. Commenting on the killing of bin Laden by an elite US task force, Indian Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General VK Singh had said earlier this month that India is capable of conducting similar covert operations to bust extremist hubs across the border.

"I just want to say that if we get the chance, Indian force's three units (Army, Air Force and Navy) are capable of doing such tasks," General Singh told reporters in Lucknow

‘Stand Up to US or Have Future Generations Deride Us’

The head of Pakistan’s powerful Directorate of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) offered his resignation to the country’s prime minister on Friday as he sought to defend the role of the spy agency. Lieut. Gen. Ahmed Shuja Pasha, the ISI chief, conceded that Osama bin Laden’s presence in Pakistan had been an “intelligence failure” and that he was prepared to step down and submit himself to any scrutiny, parliamentarians from both government and opposition parties told TIME on condition of anonymity. Gen. Pasha was speaking at a rare, closed-door briefing to Pakistan’s parliament where the lawmakers swore an oath not to reveal details discussed.

Pakistan Army And Isi Ask Govt. To Tighten Visa Regime For Journalists

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s army and premier intelligence agency (ISI) have asked the government to tighten the visa regime especially for Western media with American journalists on top of them.

According to well-placed defense sources, they have noted American journalists arriving here on ‘business visas.’ “This should not be on as these so-called media people serve as the sources of their respective intelligence agencies,” a source said requesting anonymity. “They (visiting foreign journalists) are also detrimental to our national interest as they give colour of their perception against Pakistan to the pieces of information they confront as foreigners here,” the sources observed.

Formal response to US raid was ‘inadequate’: Kayani

ISLAMABAD:
Army Chief Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani has acknowledged that an inadequate formal response to Osama bin Laden’s killing has plunged the nation into despondency and caused widespread dismay, saying elected representatives need to take people into confidence.
However, in a statement issued by the military’s press office on Monday, it was not clear whether the military chief called civilian or military response inadequate.

US Attacks Pakistan: Pakistan Forces to be Alert

By Raja G Mujtaba
Most people tend to brush aside as conspiracy theory what are clearly Zionist designs. But what is often dismissed as conspiracy theory turns out to be an intuitive analysis that is firmly grounded in little known historical facts. If people are unaware of history and want to keep their eyes shut, they are most welcome to do so; but then episodes like Abbottabad will continue to be repeated, and the people nominally in power will have not a word to offer in protest.

PAKISTAN’S LONG WAR HAS BEGUN

For Pakistanis, this is not time to feel embarrassed and to hang heads in shame over the simplicity and quickness of the operation that killed Osama Bin Laden. It is rather, a time for a long overdue bugle cry that Pakistan is at War. 1/5 was not Pakistan’s Day inasmuch as 9/11 exposed the vulnerabilities in USA’s homeland security.
Writing in Nation in December 2010, I had assessed the next eighteen months and beyond as crucial for Pakistan and reiterated it in my article ‘Pakistan Must Reassert Itself’ on 20 February. I had written, ‘the next 18 months and beyond will test Pakistan to the verge”.
Between the 14th and 17th months we have witnessed the Raymond Davis Case, a drone attack on a peaceful jirga, a fully fledged conventional multi directional night attack on a border outpost in Dir, a border skirmish at Anghoor Adda and now the operation to kill Osama Bin laden.

ISPR WARNING !

Pakistan powerful military on Thursday warned that any further action like Abbottabad, violating the sovereignty of Pakistan, will warrant a review on the level of military/intelligence cooperation with the United States.
It said that it had decided to reduce the strength of US military personnel in Pakistan to the minimum essential.
An Inter Services Public Relation (ISPR) statement issued here on Thursday said that 138th Corps Commanders’ Conference was held today at General Headquarters Rawalpindi. General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) chaired the meeting.
One point agenda was the Abbottabad incident in which Osama Bin Laden was killed by US forces. The Forum discussed the incident and its implications and on military to military relations with the United States.
While admitting own shortcomings in developing intelligence on the presence of Osama Bin Laden in Pakistan, it was highlighted that the achievements of Inter Services Intelligence (ISI), against Al Qaeda and its terrorist affiliates in Pakistan, have no parallel. The Forum was informed that around 100 top level Al Qaeda leaders / operators were killed / arrested by ISI, with or without support of CIA. However, in the case of Osama Bin Laden, while the CIA developed intelligence based on initial information provided by ISI, it did not share further development of intelligence on the case with ISI, contrary to the existing practice between the two services. Nonetheless, an investigation has been ordered into the circumstances that led to this situation.
COAS made it very clear that any similar action, violating the sovereignty of Pakistan, will warrant a review on the level of military / intelligence cooperation with the United States.

What Does Pakistan Stand to Gain in the Aftermath of Bin Laden’s Supposed Death?

By M. Zainulabedin Ameer
The Pakistani and American intelligence relationship is a very important subject of discussion. At times, it seems as though things are about to fall apart, but co-operation between the two never really diminishes. Particularly in recent times, when ties between the two have been strained, and we have felt that this marriage simply can’t work any further, the two can’t be put asunder.
With General David Petraeus becoming the new CIA chief, we have already presumed the worst in this relationship, as the Pakistanis simply don’t like the man. However, all of a sudden, there is an operation conducted under the cover of darkness, and a few hours later, American sources tell us that their Navy Seals have killed Usama Bin Laden in a compound in Abbotabad, Pakistan. It is apparent that if such a covert operation was carried out, Pakistani defense forces would almost certainly have been part of it or at least approved of it. With recent diplomatic and intelligence relations damaged particularly since the Raymond Davis issue, the people of Pakistan speculate on this recent event and wonder how we continue co-operate with the Americans.
